The Beginning

Debra Peek-Haynes is dedicated to educating people, especially in the African American community, about how to begin and live a healthier life style. Over twenty-five years ago, Debra and her husband, Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III overcame infertility and birthed a lovely healthy daughter by adopting a healthy diet. Since then, she has been on a quest to teach good news about the benefits of a healthy diet. She is known for hosting events that inform participants on how to naturally fight against heart disease and diabetes.

Debra got into action when the Flint water crisis began to receive much needed media attention. After reading an article in the New York Times about the value of organic produce and its ability to block some of the effects of lead poison, she began implementing the foundation of the Flint Refresh Project.

After researching major grocery store chains and eventually being introduced to a local organic grocer, she partnered with strategic planners, The Harvest Group and the oldest black foreign mission organization The Lott Carey International. This collaboration is helping to bring organizational structure to make organic produce accessible to children and families most in need. The Flint Refresh Project was birthed through this collaboration and is excited about its impact.

Debra will work with the local grocers in Flint and area churches and organizations to not only provide organic produce, but to also offer fun informational and cooking classes from a lay person’s perspective. She is able to demonstrate how and inspire her participants to make delicious, comfort soul food prepared with healthier ingredients. Her goal is to assist in bringing much needed nutrients and information so that more people will experience hope and wellness during this difficult time in Flint and beyond.
